Tips to Travel Solo

Tips to Travel Solo

The first solo trip is an almost a religious experience. Traveling solo gives you the chance to discover yourself fully & truly.

Of course, it has its perils too—such as safety concerns, loneliness, no one to turn to incase of any trouble or sickness and the dreaded single supplement. But fear not a little planning and common sense can save you money and get you through some bumps.

Remember its your trip, for you by you. So you have to take charge when situations demand it or you can just go with the flow if situation permits.

Its best to meet new people but keep your guard up. If someone is too charming or friendly then be careful. They may be scamsters posing as angels.

I personally don’t like eating food alone. So the best way to overcome this is to take a seat close to the window so that you can observe the people, city or just the vibes. Chat up with the staff, they are perfect to give you some great local recommendations. Or sit at the bar. Don’t get drunk though. Or simply choose an outdoor café with just your coffee and a book.

Use your judgement, if something doest feel right, then don’t do it.

Stay away from places where you are likely to be alone, especially at night.

Exude confidence wherever you go and try to blend in.

Carry your identification, keep it in separate places.

When asking for directions, speak in a manner so that people don’t think you are a traveller E.g.  “Can you direct me to the beach? I need to meet a friend.”

Check your maps and transportation schedules before leaving your hotel/train/rental car/tourist office.

Leave a copy of your itinerary with a friends or family member back home, and stay in touch regularly.

Remember to be in control at all times. Traveling solo is a great way to build confidence, You figure out ways to get going, take your self out from a jam and you start trusting your senses more and builds resourcefulness.

When you venture out into the world on your own, you eventually need to face who you are, what you care about and what you want to do with your time. Traveling with others you will find great friendship, diversion and fun; but traveling alone you might find yourself.

As Freya Stark once noted, “To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” It is a unique and heady experience.
